Yes, it did strike at the heart of one's spirit, to be told one was pitiful. Perhaps he could use this lesson going forward: Gadriel had not enjoyed it either, and in his case, it was undeserved.

"If you do not care for your family, find a better one." That's what he had done, leaving his lineage at the age of ten, to a Primarch he can respect, and an Emperor who deserves nothing but esteem. "And if you cannot ennoble your suffering by giving it purpose, find a way to cease the suffering."

While he was no Chaplain, Gadriel had studied the Codex Astartes with more diligence than many of his own peers. This is all what he had been trying to do since his arrival.

"I will give you some advice. Advice that cost me the corruption of my soul." But you get it for free. "Do not judge others by what you think you know simply because it seems similar to your home. And trust them when they speak their own experience."
